American Gangster Opening Sequence

Today in my media lesson we looked at the title sequence for the film American Gangster, a film which stars Denzel Washington playing a man who earns a living off being a chauffeur for one of Harlem's leading mobsters. We had to comment on 6 main features - characters, location, relationships, context, genre and storyline from what we saw in the sequence. Here are my interpretations from the opening scene:

Characters

The opening shows four men. Two african american men, one in a suit wearing a hat which we assume to be the boss and the other man (Denzel Washington) seeming to be lower down in hierarchy  from the boss as he is doing all of the work. There is as well foreign man being set elite, we can conclude this because he screams in another language. The fourth man in not really shown, other than the fact he pours petrol onto the foreign man, again showing status and implying that Denzel Washington will be the main character.

Location

The sound of the significant police sirens from the US imply that the film will be set in a city in America. The steaming air vents also suggest that the sequence in set in New York.

Relationships

Again I can conclude from watching the clip that the man wearing the hat is the boss seeing as he watches Denzel Washington do all the work as if he is doing as he orders. However you can also assume that Washington does have some respect from the boss because a one point he lights a cigar which signifies power.

Context

This clip takes part in the opening sequence of the film. You can tell because of the opening credits and the fact that the film's title comes up at the end of the sequence.

Storyline

There is a point in the clip where the boss is stood behind the fire which gives the essence that he himself is on fire, this suggest that something will happen to the boss. In the same shot Denzel Washington is in the foreground implying that when the boss goes he will have to take over, again making the viewer infer that Washington will be the main character.
